Great importance has been attributed to antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of conditions associated with oxidative stress for many years. At the same time the antioxidants are free radicals themselves, and they can exert pro-oxidant activity depending on the concentration.
They influence the cell redox homeostasis by their pro-oxidant and antioxidant activity as well. Drugs of chronic liver diseases should be considered, because free radicals are generated during the activity of the monooxygenase system, which affect the tissue oxidized status.
Combined antioxidant treatment is favorable compared with monotherapy because antioxidants have scavenger-compartment and tissue-specificity and they regenerate each other directly too.
Beside their antioxidant property they may also directly regulate many important processes e.g. cell cycle. We have some favourable results with regard to combined antioxidant therapy of liver disease of different etiology.

• Proven safety and efficacy of treatment in chronic HCV patients via a combination of antioxidants.
Multi antioxidative treatment in chronic in chronic HCV patients is well tolerated and may have a beneficial effect on necro-inflammatory variables. A combination antioxidative therapy may enhance the overall response rate of these patients.

• The triple antioxidant combination of alpha-lipoic acid, silymarinee and selenium was chosen for a conservative treatment of hepatitis C.
This effective and conservative regimen combines 3 potent antioxidants (alpha-lipoic acid [thioctic acid], silymarine, and selenium) that possess antiviral, free radical quenching and immune boosting qualities.
